We invest in R&D - Specialmoves

We invest in R&D

Our research & development process

We've invested in R&D right from the start of Specialmoves.  Today, we put at least 15% of our annual profit back into our research and development LAB for the following year. This investment allows us to experiment, collaborate and strive for perfection: to investigate new technologies and processes, and combine existing technologies in new ways.

What is R&D?

“Creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of man, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications”

We do R&D partly because we’re curious. But it also gives our clients confidence in our delivery of innovative techniques, rather than asking them to back untested pipe dreams.

Our clients love to see what comes out of our LAB, and talk about how they can use it. Some of our most ground breaking projects have their roots in our LAB, such as The Osbournes (2003), The Church of Fools (2005), MyDeco (2009), and Kaiser Chiefs (2011).

In the last few years we’ve changed the way we do R&D, to be more strategic and focus us more ruthlessly on in-depth projects that have obvious potential application in the real world, and/or in making our business more productive.  But our basic approach to R&D remains the same:

  1. Ideas for projects can come from anyone at anytime. And frequently do.
  2. We start with a clear objective: a problem to solve, a need to be addressed, an opportunity to be seized.

Here are our R&D Top Tips:

Make space:

lead from the top and make time for it.

Have a clear objective:

beware of 'wouldn’t it be cool if we did this' scope creep.

Make it culture:

when innovation is ingrained throughout the company from top to bottom, exciting things happen.
